What is Liposome C?
Liposome C (Liposomal Encapsulated Vitamin C) is Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate in a Liposomal Delivery System (LDS).
Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate is a powerful addition to skin care products. In order to achieve it's results, however, Vitamin C must penetrate the Corneocyte Layer to reach the target layers of skin. This is the purpose of the Liposomal Delivery System.
Liposomal Delivery Systems are microscopicvesicles that consist of an aqueous center with a phospholipid membrane. Phospholipids contain a glycerol bonded to two essential fatty acids and a phosphate group with a polar head. The essential fatty acids portion of this bio-molecule is hydrophobic and is located toward the outside of the lipid bi-layer whereas the phosphate group is hydrophilic and faces the aqueous interior. These phospholipid walls are identical to those that comprise other human cell membranes. Liposomes can differ in size, with a range in diameter between 150 - 3500nm, and they can be found in unilamellar and multilamellar forms. Unilamellar vesicles are small, exceptionally stable, molecules as they are formed via a high shear processing method. The Ingredients To Die For Liposomes are the Unilamellar structure and offer high stability for the incorporation into personal care products.
Liposomes may help to restore balance in the Stratum Corneum (top six cellular layers) through enhanced hydration which remains for several hours with enhanced delivery of the encapsulated active as it is rapidly carried through these layers.
Ascorbic acid has several documented physiological and pharmacological effects on the skin. Ascorbic acid acts as an inhibitor of melanin formation and also plays a role in collagen formation. Unfortunately, ascorbic acid cannot be USEFULLY employed in any cosmetic product because of its incredibly poor stability. Therefore, Liposome C (Liposomal Encapsulated Vitamin C) has been developed to offer formulators the benefits of a Vitamin C Active that can be delivered to the target layers, without the stability issues.
Vitamin C Actives have been widely used in various cosmetics and quasi-drugs because of their advantageous properties such as inhibitory effects on melanogenesis, promotion of collagen synthesis, and prevention of lipid peroxidation. The use of Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate in cosmetics and cosmeceuticals is an important factor in preventing dry skin, sunburn, chloasma and ephelides, and in keeping the skin healthy and young.
Classic Anti-Wrinkle lotions utilize a Vitamin C active as their only anti-aging ingredient. Vitamin C (Liposomal Encapsulated Vitamin C) is especially useful in anti-wrinkle and skin lightening formula, and it's performance in these two arenas can be enhanced by coupling the Liposome C with Sodium Lactate and / or Lactic Acid in the formula. This combination has been shown to dramatically increase the reduction of hyper-pigmentation.
Vitamin C Actives are one of the best ingredients that we can use for anti-aging and anti-oxidant products, keeping in mind that Vitamin C is highly oxidative. While there are ways to formulate with Vitamin C, minimizing oxidation to keep it safe for cosmetics use, it is very challenging and failure to effectively stabilize Vitamin C will result in an unstable product that will be unstable and create free radicals. Of course, in personal care one of the main goals is to address free radical activity to minimize it and avoid the damage created as a result. With our Liposome Vitamin C (Liposomal Encapsulated Vitamin C) is stabilized and the oxidation is no longer an issue. The added benefit is the delivery enhancement that you get with an encapsulation because the phospholipid used to encapsulate the active is a much smaller molecule which can penetrate the top, dead, layer of skin and deliver the active to the tissues where you can gain the benefits of the Vitamin C rather than having them reside in the dead layers until they are eliminated.
