Liposome CoQ10 / Ubiquinone is Co-EnzymeQ10, otherwise known as Ubiquinone, or simply CoQ10, in a Liposomal Delivery System (LDS).
CoQ10 is known as the most efficient manner to protect the skin from lipid peroxidation and helping the skin combat the resulting damage. CoQ10 has at least three important roles in the body. It is part of the inner membrane of the mitochondria, which is the power station of the cells. It is also involved in the formulation of the energy-storing adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP) in the citric acid cycle. Thirdly, CoQ10 is an antioxidant. It helps neutralize harmful free radicals, which is a key function in prevention of premature aging.
Various factors, such as aging, stress and some medications, can lower the levels of CoQ10 in the body. As a result, the ability of cells to withstand stress and regenerate declines. Unfortunately, the levels of CoQ10 in the body almost inevitably decline with age. In fact, CoQ10 is regarded as one of the most accurate biomarkers of aging since its decline correlates so well with the aging process. In some studies, rodents treated with supplemental CoQ10 lived up to 30 percent longer than their untreated counterparts. In most people over thirty, levels of CoQ10 in the skin are below optimum, resulting in lesser ability to produce collagen, elastin and other important skin molecules. CoQ10-depleted skin is more prone to damage by free radicals, which are particularly abundant in the skin since it is exposed to the elements.
Lipid Peroxidation (LPO) is a free radical-related process that is associated mostly with cellular damage as a result of oxidative stress. It is the reaction of fats and oils with oxygen to form peroxides. As the skin is the third most fatty organ in the body, it is little wonder that the effects of lipid peroxidation should manifest itself as wrinkles and brown age spots, which are a direct result of lipid peroxidation, however, the key to any active's effectiveness is getting it past the top dead layers of skin and to the tissues. This is the purpose for the LDS. The power of Ubiquinone now in a delivery system, Liposome CoQ10 / Ubiquinone, because even 0.1% in the tissues, where it can be effective, is better than 100% that just sits on the top, in the dead layers, of skin, doing nothing.
Liposomal Delivery Systems aremicroscopic vesicles that consist of an aqueous center with a phospholipid membrane. Phospholipids contain a glycerol bonded to two fatty acids and a phosphate group with a polar head. The fatty acid portion of this bio-molecule is hydrophobic and is located toward the outside of the lipid bi-layer whereas the phosphate group is hydrophilic and faces the aqueous interior. These phospholipid walls are identical to those that comprise other human cell membranes. Liposomes can differ in size, with a range in diameter between 150 - 3500nm, and they can be found in unilamellar and multilamellar forms. Unilamellar vesicles are small, exceptionally stable, molecules as they are formed via a high shear processing method. The Ingredients To Die For Liposomes are the Unilamellar structure and offer high stability for the incorporation into personal care products.
Liposomes, as related to Liposome CoQ10 / Ubiquinone, are hydrated bilayer structures that are readily compatible with the peridermal lipids (the skin's primary moisture barrier) which exist as lamellar bilayers. Lamellar bilayers require less moisture to maintain their structure. When a Liposome fuses with the epidermal lipids, the epidermal lipid structure becomes overloaded with water and out of equilibrium. To restore equilibrium, the water and Phospholipid (+ the associated active) are rapidly churned throughout the top six cell layers of the stratum corneum, hydrating this structure. The extra moisture in the lipids remains for several hours, and greater penetration of the active occurs as it is rapidly carried down through the stratum corneum, with penetration stopping at the "end" of the living epidermal cells.
