DermaNew (Glycolic Acid), extracted from sugar cane, is a naturally occurring source of glycolic acid, the smallest of the alpha hydroxy acids, which are well known for their ability to penetrate the skin to; even out skin tone, improve the skin's texture, and minimize scarring and spots, by helping to speed the removal of the top, dead, layer of skin to reveal fresher, younger, looking skin. Of the alpha hydroxy acids Glycolic Acid is the most efficient due to its smaller size and deeper penetration.
DermaNew (Glycolic Acid) is mainly used to improve the appearance, and texture, of the skin. Once applied, to the skin, the Glycolic Acid breaks down the lipids, that hold the dead skin cells on the surface, and speeds their exfoliation. It is said that 18 year old skin turns over about every 28 days, and it slows down with the normal aging process, to as much as double that time for 45 year old skin, resulting in dull, dry, congested skin and a patchy complexion. Through the speeding up of the exfoliation process, DermaNew helps to improve acne scarring, hyper pigmentation, age spots, wrinkles and seborrheic keratosis, as well as hyper keratosis.
DermaNew is also a great choice for targeted renewal of tissue build up such as dry elbows, knees, and heels, where it may help to exfoliate the dead skin build up.

To calculate the required amount of HydraNew as a replacement for straight glycolic acid, divide the desired amount of glycolic acid by .35 (assuming the lower yield) and that will be the percentage of DermaNew required to get the desired glycolic acid levels so, if you wanted to end up with 4% glycolic acid in your formula it would look like this: 4 / .35 = 11.428 (which you would round up to 11.43) indicating that you will use 11.43% DermaNew which will result in 4% glycolic acid.
It's important to note that the pH of the final formulation is just as important as the concentration level. At home products should be formulated within the usage range of 10 to 12%, with a pH between 4.0 and 4.5.
Please be aware that when you use AHA's on the skin you are exposing new skin, which is much more susceptible to UV damage. Always follow with an adequate sunscreen. Per FDA guidelines, "FDA Topically Applied Cosmetics Containing AHA's Labeling Requirements", all products should include the AHA warning, below, and suggestion to include or follow with a sunscreen. You can copy and paste the red text into your web browser or go to the FDA website and read the entire document, which is highly recommended.
* Sunburn Alert: This product contains an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that may increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun and particularly the possibility of sunburn. Use a sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and limit sun exposure while using this product and for a week afterwards
CAUTION :: As with all of the acids, it is important to let your skin acclimate to their use. For those who's skin is not used to the acids a slight stinging and redness may result.
